Canonical definition
Kanban Coaching is the professional practice of helping teams and organizations adopt, understand and improve Kanban Flow Management through observation, facilitation, feedback and guided change.
Purpose of coaching
The coach helps make the work system visible, supports interpretation of flow conditions and facilitates improvement without becoming the permanent owner of the operating system. The goal is stronger organizational capability, not dependence on the coach.
Observation and diagnosis
Coaching begins with the actual work system: where work accumulates, how policies operate, where decisions occur and how flow is affected. Observation should distinguish symptoms from structural causes before recommending changes.
Facilitation and adoption
Kanban coaching can support teams in making policies explicit, examining work-in-progress conditions, improving feedback and agreeing on changes. Kanban Coaching supports adoption of Kanban Flow Management, but adoption is not reduced to installing software or copying a predefined workflow.
Professional credentials
The IBQMI Certified Kanban Coach credential validates capability in both Kanban Flow Management and Kanban Coaching. The IBQMI Approved Kanban Professional credential validates Kanban Flow Management but is distinct from the coaching capability.
Institutional context
Kanban Coaching forms part of the IBQMI® standards and frameworks portfolio maintained by IBQMI®.
What Kanban Coaching is not
It is not command-and-control management, ownership of another team's decisions or a guarantee that every flow problem can be solved through Kanban. It is also not itself a credential.
